April is Human Awareness Month: A Personal Dedication from DevahD Cycling
As the days grow longer and the air gets warmer, something stirs in all of us—an urge to get out, move around, and reconnect with the world outside. April marks a seasonal shift and an opportunity to be more mindful of ourselves, each other, and the spaces we share. That’s why DevahD Cycling is proud to dedicate April as Human Awareness Month—a time to honor the simple fact that we’re all human, we’re all outside, and safety starts with awareness.
What is Human Awareness Month?
It’s not just about cycling—it’s about being present. It’s about recognizing that spring brings us outdoors: kids playing in the yard, neighbors walking their dogs, runners hitting the trails, and cyclists rolling through the streets. Whether you're on two wheels or two feet, Human Awareness Month is a reminder to look up, look out, and look after each other.
This month is our personal way of warming up for National Bike Month in May, when cycling takes center stage. But before we jump into a month full of group rides, events, and bike fun, we want to take a moment to simply be aware—of ourselves, our community, and the roads we all share.
Let’s Talk About Safety (The Big Word)
Safety isn’t just about helmets and hand signals (though yes, definitely wear your helmet). It's about building a culture where people look out for each other. It's about riding or walking in groups when possible, using lights and bright colors to be seen, and respecting each other’s space.
When you pass someone walking or biking, give them room. When you see a child riding, slow down and be patient. Human awareness is about empathy. Everyone out there is someone’s parent, kid, friend, or neighbor.
Tips for Practicing Human Awareness
As we all step outside more and spend less time on the couch, here are a few ways to stay mindful and safe:
🚶♀️ Walk with purpose – Stay alert, avoid distractions like phones, and make eye contact at crosswalks.
🚲 Ride like you're invisible—but hope you're not – Use lights, wear bright clothing, and signal your moves.
🚗 Drive like everyone outside is someone you care about – Because they are.
👀 Be present – Whether you’re on a bike, walking, or watching your kids play, awareness can prevent accidents.
🤝 Group up – There’s power (and safety) in numbers. Walking, riding, or skating with friends makes it more fun and more visible to others.
🌳 Respect the shared space – Parks, trails, streets, and sidewalks belong to all of us.
A Season of Connection
Human Awareness Month is about more than just avoiding collisions—it’s about connections. Spring is a beautiful reminder that we thrive when we move together, support one another, and stay mindful of the world around us.
So this April, as you step outside into the sunshine, remember to slow down, look around, and breathe in the moment. From DevahD Cycling to all of you—be safe, be seen, and be human.
See you out there having fun on two feet, 4, 3, 2 and sometimes 1 wheel
